Degree project in a technical programme

Instructions on how to complete your degree project at one of the engineering programs are described below. These are based on the common guidelines and instructions for degree projects that apply to all engineering programs.

Note that in addition to the instructions below, there may be program-specific supplements. These can be found on your program page in Studium or given by the program at information events.

Start with gathering information regarding pre-requisite knowledge, the content of the course syllabus and the guidelines for degree projects. Appendix 2-4 in the guidelines for degree project describe the project tasks and responsibilities of the examiner, supervisor and subject reviewer.

If you need inspiration you can find already published degree projects in DiVA.

When you found a suitable project, draft a preliminary project plan and present your proposal to the examiner.

Present your idea to the examiner or coordinator. Examiner decides if your project is relevant and within reason. Suggest a subject reviewer.

Discuss the preliminary project plan with your subject reviewer, revise it if needed and set up a preliminary time frame. The project plan should also contain a plan for how you and the subject reviewer will keep in touch and how often. Together the two of you should go over the course objectives and how your project will achieve them.

You can't apply for the degree project course at antagning.se or Universityadmission.se. In order to be registered for your degree project, you need to apply with an application form (pdf) Pdf, 87 kB.. If possible, you can sign the form with an electronic signature.

The application must include details regarding:

  • Subject reviewer
  • Examiner
  • Supervisor
  • Revised project plan and your result certificate
  • Start and end date. Make sure that the time you specify in the application corresponds to the permitted course moments for your programme.

Send the application to the examiner after your subject reviewer and supervisor have signed it.

If the project owner at an external degree project asks for a signed contract between the organisation, the student and the University, please use the collaboration agreement at Uppsala university in collaboration with a third party (word). Word, 30 kB.

If requested, a form for an agreement between a student and a project owner within the university is also available (pdf) Pdf, 118 kB..

Once your application is approved you may start your project.

Update your project plan latest 5 weeks after start. Keep regular contact with your supervisor and subject reviewer during the project as agreed.

Plan your written report well in advance and go through the preliminary report with your supervisor and subject reviewer. When your report is nearing completion and the reviewer gives you the go-ahead, plan your presentation.

Use the following templates for the cover page and abstract:

Abstract shall not exceed half a page and be written in english. The third page in the report shall be a popular scientific summary of about 1-2 pages.

The project will be examined on presentation, opposition and the written report. You shall send your written report to the examiner and your opponent seven days, at the latest, prior to your presentation. If your presentation demands secrecy you need to notify the examiner and the opponent well ahead of time. Keep in mind that your subject reviewer, examiner and opponent all need to be able to attend your presentation.

Before submission, your report will be checked for plagiarism. Usually the anti-plagiarism service Urkund is used.

Besides the written report and presentation of your own project, you also need to oppose another degree project in order to pass the course.

After the presentation, you correct any changes needed in the written report and let the subject reviewer endorse the final version. After that, you send the report to the examiner for final approval.

After passing the opposition, presentation and the written report you pass the course.

When you've passed your degree project you should publish the written report to DiVA.

First you need to create a serial number for the front page.

Then you can upload the final version of the report to DiVA (see the instructions in the email reply you receive when creating a serial number)

If the degree project needs secrecy or a delayed time for publishing the report shall be archived but not published in DiVA.
