The invasion in Ukraine
Uppsala University endorses the Swedish Government’s firm condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Like the rest of the word, the University is following the horrific events in Ukraine. At a time like this, it is important that we as a university take a clear stand in defence of democratic values and the freedom of academia and research. Naturally my thoughts go first and foremost to everyone in Ukraine who is affected by the war,” says Vice-Chancellor Anders Hagfeldt.
Uppsala University has started efforts to try to anticipate potential consequences for individuals from Ukraine who are currently in Uppsala or on Gotland studying or working at the University.
According to our information – and as far as we know – no students or members of staff from Uppsala University are in Ukraine at the present time. However, we do have students and members of staff from Ukraine.
Universities in Ukraine have been forced to close because of the invasion, with serious consequences for education and research. Uppsala University, together with other Swedish universities and the organization Scolars at Risk, is preparing possibilities to assist colleagues and students on the run.
Uppsala University is part of several international networks where we collaborate on common issues for European universities and come together around fundamental academic values, freedom of expression and academic freedom.

The occupational health service can offer professional support to University employees experiencing stress and anxiety in connection with these events:
The Student Health Service can offer counselling to students. The Health Service staff includes counsellors and psychologists.
The university chaplains offer support and comfort to all University employees and students, whatever their religion or belief.
Uppsala University has also started efforts to identify areas in which immediate action is necessary to maintain research and educational activities at the University and to analyse how to deal with the sanctions against Russia and their potential impact.
