About the course

The course provides an overview of research and central theories in the field of historical sociolinguistics and discusses linguistic variation as well as the social significance of language in a historical perspective. Central elements of the course are language in society, multilingualism, language and community, language and spatiality, literacy and the emergence of linguistic standards. The course deals with different methods for the analysis of language usage in history and introduces Digital Humanities research infrastructures and methods. The course is not limited to the history of a particular language. No proficiency is required in any particular language other than English.
