EANWoBAS - Eastern Africa Network for Women in Basic Sciences

EANWoBAS consists of students and staff members in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) from universities in:

• Kenya
• Rwanda
• Tanzania
• Uganda
• Zambia

ISP graduate Dr Betty Nannyonga started to address the issue of underrepresentation of females in the basic sciences at Makerere University in Uganda. The initiative grew bigger and lead to the birth of Uganda Women Mathematicians (UGAWOM) in 2018 – comprising of female mathematicians from universities all over Uganda. A year later, she went regional and started EANWoBAS together with ISP partners in East Africa.

The network has received ISP support since 2019 and is coordinated by Dr Betty Nannyonga.

Objectives

The network envisions to be leading in creating gender balance representation in the basic sciences, on all levels from primary to tertiary education in East Africa.

Among other things, the network aim to increase the number of women through mentorship for female students, organizing outreach activities and school visits, and opt for gender awareness in teaching. EANWoBAS will help girls in the region to learn about the importance of basic sciences to individual, community and national development.
