Physics groups in Bangladesh

ISP Physics supports the following research groups in Bangladesh:

Development of magnetic materials

The Dhaka materials science group at the Magnetic Materials Division of the Atomic Energy Centre (AECD), worked jointly with a group at Department of Physics at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), until 2017, when separate support started. The activities are coordinated by Dr Engr Manjura Hoque (AECD).

ISP has supported the original program since 1986.

Objectives

The group studies the structural and physical properties of nanoscaled oxides, as well as their magnetic, electrical, and biological applications, with focus in nanobiophysics and biomedicine.

The overall objective of the research activity of the group is to attain sufficient capability to address cutting edge scientific issues, in the international perspective, within magnetic research and development of magnetic materials. Fabrication of nanostructured magnetic materials has gained enormous importance with the progress of their continuous and ever demanding application in various fields of technology these days. The applicability of such materials spans from high-tech applications to basic health science and medicine. Miniaturization of devices for technological components in science and technology demands special attention towards nanostructured magnetic materials. Targeted drug delivery using MRI or contrast in hyperthermia research for studying the thermal therapy of malignant tissues are novel examples of the application of nanoscience. Use of high frequency ferrites in communication devices is another example of potential applications.

Biomedical physics & technology

The ISP support to Department of Biomedical Physics & Technology at University of Dhaka started in 2011. The activities are coordinated by Dr Muhammad Abdul Kadir.

Objectives

Through developing qualified manpower the department aims at developing further understanding and useful applications of its innovations, targeted towards the healthcare of the common people in developing countries.

Indigenous development, application and dissemination of innovative and low-cost healthcare technologies is important for developing countries where almost 80% of the global population lives without access to modern healthcare. This will be done in the present project through creation of leadership through PhD and MPhil programmes, and dissemination through regional and international exchanges, workshops and conferences. The department plans to bring in scientists or students from other countries of the South in order to disseminate its expertise in providing modern healthcare equipment for local population. Exchanges with scientific institutions in technologically advanced countries will allow further development of its expertise and the scope of this work. The department has already some innovations in healthcare technology that directly fit in the aims mentioned above.

Nanophysics

The ISP support to Department of Physics, University of Dhaka started in 2014. The activities are coordinated by Dr K Sadaat Hossain.

Objectives

  • To modernize the existing nanophysics laboratory with state of the art research facilities.
  • To start an extensive research on nanomaterials such as coordination polymers, biopolymers, like DNA and proteins as well as chemically modified graphene for nanoelectronic applications.
  • To create research opportunity for postgraduate students and researchers in Bangladesh, in the field of nanotechnology.

The above tasks will be achieved by using Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) technique.
