Forskningen i Siv Andersson´s grupp syftar till att förstå hur intracellulära bakterier och organeller evolverar. Kunskap om värd-anpassade bakteriers arvsmassor är viktig för vår förståelse av samspelet mellan bakterier och högre organismer. Vilka genfunktioner krävs för liv inom och utanför redan existerande celler? Hur skall dessa gener organiseras och bäddas in i en värdcell för att bidra med funktioner som är nyttiga för värden? Ett långsiktigt mål är att ha en så djup kunskap om dessa processer att vi kan designa bakteriella arvsmassor med nya, nyttiga funktioner.

Evolution av värdanpassade bakterier
Forskningen i Siv Andersson´s grupp syftar till att förstå hur intracellulära bakterier och organeller evolverar. Ett långsiktigt mål är att designa nya bakteriella arvsmassor med nyttiga funktioner med hjälp av syntetisk biologi. För att lyckas med detta behöver vi en grundläggande förståelse för samspelet mellan bakterier och deras värdorganismer, och vi behöver även förstå varför organeller och bakterier som bidrar med viktiga funktioner för sin värd har en egen arvsmassa. Nedan är några exempel på pågående projekt.
Varför behöver vissa organismer bakterier?
Det finns många bakterier som producerar viktiga näringsämnen för högre organismer som dessa inte kan få från sin mat. Andra bakterier producerar antibiotika för att försvara sin värd från patogener och andra invaderande mikroorganismer. De ämnen som produceras och skickas ut är till nytta för hela den bakteriella populationen och/eller för värden, men det kostar mycket för den enskilda cellen att producera dem. Det är därför en risk att smitare uppstår som inte själva bidrar till produktionen. I detta projekt använder vi bakterier som är anpassade till däggdjur och insekter som modell-system för att studera hur produktionen av ämnen som är till nytta för hela samhället organiseras och hur risken för smitare minimeras.
Varför behöver vissa celler inre ”fack”?
Eukaryota celler innehåller flera membranbundna ”fack” som till exempel mitokondrierna. Bakterieceller har normalt inte inre membranstrukturer. Men det finns undantag. För att förstå varför och hur komplexa cellulära strukturer uppstår studerar vi en ovanlig grupp av bakterieceller som innehåller ett nätverk av inre membran. I detta projekt använder vi jämförande, funktionell och ekologisk genomik för att lära oss mer om hur och varför cellulära strukturer uppstår.
Varför innehåller vissa inre ”fack” egna arvsmassor?
Vi har nyligen publicerat resultat som stöder hypotesen att mitokondrier behöver en egen arvsmassa för att undvika att de mitokondriella proteinerna felaktigt transporteras till endoplasmatiskt reticulum. För att transportera proteiner mellan olika fack i cellen och vara säker på att de hamnar rätt krävs en mängd olika signaler. I detta projekt använder vi bioinformatiska och experimentella metoder för att få en djupare förståelse om varför mitokondrier innehåller sin egen arvsmassa.
Vårt arbete stöds av Vetenskapsrådet (VR) och Knut och Alice Wallenbergs Stiftelse (KAW). Dessutom deltar vi i flera samarbetsprojekt: Uppsala Center for Evolutionary Genomics (supported by VR), the Human Microbiome in Health and Disease (supported by KAW) and Inland Water Ecosystems in the Global Carbon Cycle – Towards a Mechanistic Understanding (supported by KAW).
