Publishing agreements at Uppsala university

Our OA agreements with many publishers allow Uppsala University researchers to publish open access without having to pay article processing cost (APC), or with a discount.

How to use the agreements

When you publish your research in an Open Access journal, you often have to pay an Article Publishing Charge (APC). By publishing within our OA agreements, you can avoid these charges or get discounts.

Requirements for using the agreements:

The corresponding author, who handles the manuscript and correspondence during the publication process, must be affiliated to Uppsala University.
Use your e-mail address that ends with "uu.se", and enter Uppsala University as the organisation when you submit your paper.
Be sure to state your full affiliation with Uppsala University in the final publication. You can find more information in Affiliation procedures when publishing research at Uppsala University.

Don't forget:

The agreements are subject to change. Over time, some journals will unfortunately be removed while others are added. Always double-check before submitting!
Some agreements cover only certain article types. Make sure to double-check this if you plan to publish something other than an Original article/paper or similar.
For some agreements, you will have to actively request triggering the agreement. For full instructions, please see the list of individual agreements below.
Additional costs for page charges, colour charges etc. are usually not covered by our agreements, but need to be paid separately by the author.

American Chemical Society (ACS)

To use the agreement

The agreement covers the article types research articles, review articles, rapid communications, brief reports och case reports.
The following publication licenses are covered by the agreement: CC-BY, CC-BY-NC, CC-BY-NC-ND and CC-BY-NC-SA.
The agreement also covers retroactive publication with open access. If authors have published behind the paywall, they can have their article turned into open access. (If it is requested the same year the article was published.)

The agreement covers all article types.
Articles submitted to the publisher's journals from 2024-01-01 onwards are covered by the agreement.

Open access publishing in American Astronomical Society (they're only offering open access publishing for a publishing fee outside the agreement).

Open Library of Humanities

Open Library of Humanities (OLH) offers open access publishing without publishing fees. Instead, publication costs are funded with grants from universities and research funders around the world. Uppsala University is one of the universities that support OLH.

What is included in OLH?

Open access publishing without costs in all their journals.

Who can publish with OLH?

Researchers, employees and students who are or have been affiliated with Uppsala University when the article was written.

What publishing licenses are in OLH?

Oxford University Press

Uppsala University has an active subscription to PNAS which gives university researchers a discount on the publication cost when they choose to publish with immediate open access.
The following publication licenses are covered by the agreement: CC-BY-NC-ND and CC-BY.

The publisher has no automatic discount system. Inform the publisher that you want to use the university's discount when you choose to publish with open access.

Public Library of Science (PLOS)

To use the agreement

The agreement covers all article types.
The following publication licenses are covered by the agreement: CC-BY 4.0.
If the corresponding author is not affiliated with Uppsala University, you can still get a 25% discount on the publication cost if one of the co-authors is affiliated with Uppsala University. This applies for the journals: PLOS Medicine, PLOS Biology and PLOS Sustainability & Transformation.

What is included in the agreement?

With funding through SCOAP3 (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics), the central high energy physics journals have been transformed into fully open access journals. Uppsala University is one of the Swedish Higher Education Institutions that contribute financially to the SCOAP3 project. Researchers at Uppsala University can therefore publish with open access without an article processing charge in the project's 11 journals.
The following publication licenses are covered by the agreement: CC-BY.

SCOAP3 would like authors to include their ORCID ID when submitting their article.

Information is available on SCOAP3's website under 'author guidelines' in the various journals.

Open access publishing without publication cost of scientific articles in fully open access journals including from BioMed Central (BMC), Springer Open journals and Nature Research.
The agreement covers publishing for Original Paper, Review Paper, Brief Communication, Continuing Education. Please note that some journals use a different set of names for their publication types. Don't hesitate to contact us if you need our help to sort this out.

The agreement covers the general article types Original article, Primary research article och Review article, but within each category there are a large number of subcategories.
Most articles are published with a CC-BY license, but there are some journals that only offers CC-BY-NC or CC-BY-NC-ND licenses.
