Doctoral exchange with Berkeley, University of California

This agreement offers doctoral students at Uppsala University and the Institute of European Studies (IES) at Berkeley, University of California, the opportunity to spend between one and three months at the other university.

Purpose of the exchange agreement

Uppsala University and the University of California aspire to establish various types of exchanges in research and education. As a step towards achieving this ambition, the two universities have entered into this doctoral student exchange agreement.
The target is for two doctoral students per year from each university to take part in the exchange.

Information for doctoral students who want to apply

Eligibility requirements

  • You are admitted to a doctoral programme at Uppsala University.
  • You have established contact with a researcher (or contact person) at IES who has undertaken in writing to receive you and to serve as your host during your stay. Find a suitable person to contact in this list with all IES affiliated faculty members on the IES website.

  • If you have been nominated but have declined the place, you can reapply.
  • If you have already taken part in an exchange under the agreement, you cannot apply again.

Your application will be assessed by a nomination committee at Uppsala University. The committee will nominate a maximum of two doctoral students per academic year. A corresponding committee at IES will take the final decision on whether the candidates nominated by Uppsala University can take part in the exchange.

Costs

Thanks to the agreement, you do not need to pay IES's regular tuition fee, but you do need to bear the costs of the following:

  • Travel to and from the United States
  • Residence in the United States
  • University Administrative Fees (formerly $1500)
  • Visa-related fees

Application

The application for visits at IES in 2024 is closed.

Applications are open once a year. You can apply to visit IES for a stay starting no sooner than six months after notification that your application has been approved. Dates for the application period will be published here.

You apply by uploading the following documents in the application link in KURT before the current application period's deadline:

  1. A personal letter (2-3 pages) containing
    • a personal presentation
    • a brief description of your dissertation project
    • an explanation of why a period at IES would benefit your current doctoral studies
  2. CV (max 2 pages)
  3. A certificate showing that your application has the support of your supervisor and the director of studies of the doctoral programme to which you have been admitted.
  4. Your current individual study plan.

You also need a written invitation from a contact person at IES, certifying that they undertake to receive you and serve as your host during your stay. Send this to karin.sandrup@uu.se no later than 13 December 2023. Find a suitable person to contact in this list with all IES-affiliated faculty members on the IES website.

You will get notified regarding your application no later than February 2024.

Information for the host department

Before a doctoral student at IES can apply to doing an exchange at Uppsala University, they must have a contact person at the university.

  • Act as the doctoral student’s host during their stay at the university.
  • Inform the head of department at the host department.

  • Make sure the incoming doctoral student gets the status of a visiting doctoral student. This means that during the stay, the doctoral student must have access to the department’s research environment, research seminars and the resources of Uppsala University Library.
  • Ensure that the incoming doctoral student has access to the same facilities as holders of doctoral studentships at Uppsala University (i.e. a work station, computer, WiFi, access card, etc.).
  • Ensure that the incoming doctoral student receives support in their academic development and help in acclimatising to the physical and social/cultural environment.
  • Ensure that the incoming doctoral student is informed about the rules and guidelines in force at the department and the university.
