Insurances for students who are studying abroad

Information on insurance for students studying abroad via or at Uppsala University.

For outgoing students from Uppsala University

Exchange students

All Uppsala University students who undertake exchange studies at one of our partner universities are covered by the Student OUT insurance policy offered by Kammarkollegiet.

The policy covers areas such as personal injury protection, medical and dental care protection, property protection, liability protection and legal expenses protection. The Student OUT insurance coverage applies 24 hours a day in the country of study from two weeks before the studies begin up until two weeks after the studies end, as well as during direct travel to and from the country of study. The coverage does not entail an excess, with the exception of property protection where the excess is 1500 kr.

Sweden has agreements governing sickness benefits with the Nordic countries, EU/EEA countries and Switzerland. Students who are going to travel to one of these countries must bring a certificate/EU health insurance card from Försäkringskassan in order to receive medical care in line with the agreements, that is, on the same terms as a citizen of the country in question. On the other hand, students who will be travelling to other countries must obtain a personal insurance certificate signed by the exchange coordinator in order to show that they have satisfactory health insurance and are covered by the Student OUT insurance policy.

For more information about the Student OUT insurance, please refer to Kammarkollegiet's webpage about Student OUT.

Trainees

If a student is undertaking a traineeship/internship placement, degree project, field studies or similar abroad, they may be covered by the Student OUT insurance policy, provided that:

  • they are registered for a course at UU of which the placement or degree project is a part.
  • the student’s department at UU signs a hosting agreement to receive them together with the university/organisation/company that the student is visiting abroad.

For more information about the Student OUT insurance, please refer to Kammarkollegiet's webpage about Student OUT.

For incoming students to Uppsala University

All students in Sweden are covered by a personal injury insurance (more information on Kammarkollegiet's webpage about insurance for university students in Sweden). However, this policy only applies on university premises and during direct journeys to and from the university’s teaching premises.

If you need to refer students to information about the process for accessing healthcare, see the page on what to do in a crisis or if you fall ill.

Exchange students

Uppsala University has signed the Student IN insurance policy provided by Kammarkollegiet for incoming exchange students.

The Student OUT insurance coverage applies 24 hours a day in Sweden from two weeks before the studies begin (including the welcome programme) up until two weeks after the studies end.

The Student IN insurance policy covers emergency medical care, emergency dental care and has limited accident protection, limited liability protection and limited legal expenses protection. Note that the insurance policy, unlike the Student OUT insurance, does not offer protection for students’ private property. Please also note that it only applies insofar as the student does not have their own private insurance.

Citizens of a Nordic country, EU/EEA country or Switzerland are not covered by the Student IN policy’s medical and dental care protection. Instead, they should bring their EU health insurance card that entitles them to healthcare on the same terms as Swedish citizens.

For more information about the Student IN insurance, please refer to Kammarkollegiet's webpage about Student IN.

Fee-paying students

Uppsala University has signed the FASplus insurance policy provided by Kammarkollegiet for fee-paying students.

The insurance applies 24 hours a day in Sweden from two weeks before the studies begin (including the welcome programme) up until two weeks after the studies end.

The FASplus insurance policy primarily covers emergency medical and dental care, but also limited accident protection, liability protection, legal expenses protection and private property protection.

Note that the insurance policy only applies insofar as the student does not have their own private insurance and does not apply to EU/EEA citizens. They should bring their EU health insurance card that entitles them to healthcare on the same terms as Swedish citizens.

For more information about the FASplus insurance, please refer to Kammarkollegiet's webpage about FASplus.
