Additional support for sustainable means of transport

In addition to the Erasmus grant for studies and traineeships, you can apply for and receive two grants for travelling sustainably: the top-up for green travel and the Green Travel Grant.

This additional support is not applicable for students who are undertaking an Erasmus traineeship outside the EU within one of the countries in the grant level group 3.

The following applies in order to be able to apply for additional support for sustainable means of tranport:

  • The majority of the total journey (round trip) must be by green means of transport to be eligible for the additional grant for sustainable travel. One-way does not apply.
  • To be eligible for the grant for carpooling, you need to be at least two persons in the car. As proof of car-pooling, you can upload receipts from the car rental, petrol, bridge, and road tolls.
  • If you decide to make one or several stops along the journey, you must make sure to have additional insurance for this period. This is because Kammarkollegiet's insurance, which is provided together with your Erasmus grant for studies, is valid only for the most direct journey possible.
  • Please note that the green travel grant is only possible if you are travelling from your place of origin, the place where the sending organisation is located, and the place of the venue, place where the receiving organisation is located.
  • As long as you do not fly, you can combine different means of sustainable transport (bike, bus, train, car-pooling). You are allowed to use ferry only for a short part, and if the rest of the journey (majority of the round trip) takes place by the green mean of transport (bike, train, bus, car-pooling) and not by plane.

Will you travel to your final destination using sustainable means of transport (bike, train, bus, or car-pooling)? If so, you can receive EUR 50 as a top-up amount. Included in this additional grant is also two days of extra additional individual support, to cover travel days for a return travel. Those days will be added to your total study period at the end of your exchange.

Application

  1. You state that you intend to travel by train, bus och carpool directly in the grant application in MoveON.
  2. You upload receipts from your sustainable travels in MoveON. For example a train ticket or a receipt for car fuel.

Each semester, the Unit for International Mobility announces several Green Travel Grants worth max. EUR 190 each, for students who choose to travel to their study destination using sustainable means of transport (train, bus, and carpooling). The EUR 190 can be used to either buy a round-trip ticket or as a contribution to an Interrail pass.

In the event of any competition for these grants, a randomised selection will take place. However, if you have been granted the Green Travel Grant before, your application will not be prioritised.
